He danced in the 1989 Royal Ballet School performance at the Royal Opera House, and also at the subsequent performances in Holland Park when he appeared as the Young man in Ashton's The Two Pigeons and the White Pas de deux in Les Patineurs. He joined The Royal Ballet in September 1989, was promoted to First Artist in September 1993 and Soloist in September 1995. He left the Company in January 1999 to co-found Tetsuya Kumakawa’s new company. In 2002 he joined ENB as a First Soloist and later rejoined The Royal Ballet in September 2004.

He dances a wide range of roles in Kenneth MacMillan’s works: Baron Phillip and Colonel ‘Bay’ Middleton in Mayerling, Monsieur GM in Manon, Tsar Nicholas II and Anna’s Husband in Anastasia, Paris in Romeo and Juliet and the King of the South in The Prince of the Pagodas. His Frederick Ashton repertory includes the Pas de quatre in Scenes de ballet, Demetrius in The Dream, a Season Fairy Cavalier and one of the Prince’s Friends in Cinderella, the Fox in Tales of Beatrix Potter, Rakitin in A Month in the Country, Bryaxis in Daphnis and Chloë and a leading role in La Valse.

Other roles include the Wolf and the Russian Prince in The Sleeping Beauty, Wilfred and Hilarion in Giselle, Prince Gremin in John Cranko’s Onegin, the Head Brahmin in La Bayadère and the Moor in Fokine’s Petrushka. He also dances the Servant in Balanchine's Prodigal Son, the Pas de trois in Ballet Imperial, the Second Movement of Symphony in C, the Count in Glen Tetley’s La Ronde, the Goat in Ashley Page’s Renard, Fearful Symmetries, the 'Now Nothing' Pas de deux in David Bintley's Still Life at the Penguin Café, William Tuckett's Desirable Hostilities, the Broad Bean in Twyla Tharp’s Mr Worldly Wise, Arnold in Ashton’s Enigma Variations, the second movement of MacMillan’s Concerto and The Man in Las Hermanas. On the 1995 Dance Bites tour he appeared in The Royal Ballet premiere of Will Tuckett’s A Shropshire Lad.

He has created the role of the brother in MacMillan’s Winter Dreams, two roles for the 1996 Dance Bites tour, the lead man in Ashley Page’s Sleeping with Audrey, a supporting role in Christopher Wheeldon’s Souvenir, Danse à grande vitesse and Page’s Two Part Invention (Part II, later dancing the Lead Boy of Couple C). He has also created roles in Ashley Page’s When We Stop Talking (Dance Bites tour), Cheating, Lying, Stealing, Christopher Bruce’s Three Songs – Two Voices, Will Tuckett’s The Seven Deadly Sins, Peter Quanz’s Fantasy, Matjash Mrozewski’s Castle Nowhere and as Consort to the Queen of Fire in Christopher Wheeldon’s Fire as part of Homage to The Queen (2006).

Since re-joining The Royal Ballet he has made his debut as Orion in Ashton’s Sylvia, the Groom’s Father in Bronislava Nijinska’s Les Noces, Benno in Anthony Dowell’s Swan Lake, the Gaoler in MacMillan’s Manon, My Brother, My Sister, 1st Gray Song Boy in Song of the Earth and Bintley’s Tombeaux. He also made his debut dancing the lead male in the Pas de deux from MacMillan’s Elite Syncopations for ‘A Curtain Call for Aid’ Asian Tsunami benefit performance, Madge in Johan Kobborg’s production of August Bournonville’s La Sylphide, the Bridegroom in Andrée Howard’s La Fête étrange, Drosselmeyer in Peter Wright’s production of The Nutcracker, Hilarion and the Duke in his Giselle, He in MacMillan’s My Brother, My Sisters, Lord Capulet and Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, the Pas de deux Boy in Gloria, the Immortal Kostcheï in Fokine’s The Firebird, Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia, the King and French Prince in the Monica Mason and Christopher Newton production of The Sleeping Beauty, The Rajah in La Bayadère and the male role in the White Couple Pas de deux from Les Patineurs.
